Required for Private School and College Admission
TOEFL is required for international student admission at most US private schools and colleges. TOEFL iBT is the online version, which is by far the more popular. There is also a TOEFL Paper-Based Test available, though this is only recommended in areas where no Internet service is available.
TOEFL iBT® Test Content
The TOEFL iBT has four sections and runs around 4.5 hours in duration, from check in to test completion. Students must:
- Read, and then answer questions
- Listen, and then respond to questions
- Read, listen, and then write responses to questions
TOEFL iBT Test Sections
|Reading||60–80 minutes||36–56 questions||Read 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answer questions.|
|Listening||60–90 minutes||34–51 questions||Listen to lectures, classroom discussions and conversations, then answer questions.|
|Speaking||20 minutes||6 tasks||Express an opinion on a familiar topic; speak based on reading and listening tasks.|
|Writing||50 minutes||2 tasks||Write essay responses based on reading and listening tasks; support an opinion in writing.|
Scoring for each section is on a 0 to 30 scale. The Total TOEFL score is the sum of all four subscores. Required score for admission to a top college or private school is usually >105.
TOEFL Prep at NC Global
NC Global offers premier private tutoring for all four sections of the TOEFL. The length of time required to prepare students for the TOEFL is determined by determining assessing initial English proficiency level and final goals. For example, if a student’s English skills are relatively weak and yet their goal is to attend a highly competitive college or private school, TOEFL prep can be as long as twelve months. If however, speaking, listening, and reading skills are relatively strong, and the student needs to work primarily on writing, then preparation can be as short as 8 weeks. Because preparation for TOEFL also provides English instruction, NC Global students are often able to master the TOEFL test and the English language concurrently.
