About the SAT Test
The SAT is a standardized college entrance exam that is designed to measure students’ abilities in four areas: Reading, Writing and Language, Math, and an optional Essay.
The SAT Reading section focuses on reading comprehension, interpreting words and phrases in context, and analyzing quantitative information. It consists of 52 multiple-choice questions that are based on passages drawn from U.S. and World Literature, History/Social Studies, and Science. Questions may also be based on graphical representations of data such as graphs, charts, or tables.
The SAT Writing and Language section focuses on English grammar and punctuation as well as effective language usage. There are 44 multiple-choice questions related to four passages on a range of topics that include Careers, History/Social Studies, Humanities and Science. Some passages include one or more tables, graphs, or charts that relate to the topic of the passage.
The SAT Math section is divided into two subsections: calculator (for which you may use a calculator if desired) and no calculator. The Math section is designed to measure problem-solving abilities and data analysis. There are 38 questions in the calculator section and 20 questions in the no-calculator section.
The SAT Essay is optional, but some colleges and universities require it and virtually all colleges will accept it for admission. Since not all students will opt in, choosing to take the SAT Essay is an opportunity to separate yourself from the pack. The SAT Essay requires you to read a passage and write an essay analyzing the author’s argument using evidence from the passage to support your evaluation. Whether required or not, the Essay will give you an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your reading, analysis and writing skills.
To do well on the SAT, it’s important to understand what each of the sections measures, what you will be tested on, and learn skills and techniques that can help you get the scores you want. A personalized NC Global 50-Point Plan™ can help.
