Private School Applications

Deadlines: January 15 and Feb 1
Decision Notification Date: March 10

All activities associated with the applications must be completed by the application deadline. These include: tours, tests, interviews, essays, personal statements, and recommendations. In some cases, schools will allow you to send scores and recommendations after the deadline has passed. Please check with the individual schools for their application completion and submission policies.

Many families apply to several private schools. Most schools use one of the three common applications: the Gateway to Prep Schools, Ravenna, or Standard Application Online. We recommend that you seek the assistance of our professional team in filling out applications, especially when it comes to the essays. Both the student and parent essays must be high quality and error-free. And speaking of the essays, be judicious in your use of adjectives. Use of superlatives, for example (great, terrific, smart, amazing, incredible, unparalleled, unprecedented, fantastic) almost always has the exact opposite of the intended effect. Since you cannot be present during the selection process, the application will, in effect, be your representative or proxy. A clean, attractive, error-free, polished, consistent application will represent you far better than one that is erratic, inconsistent, and full of errors.

The Character Skills Snapshot

Many schools either recommend or require the Character Skills Snapshot. It is offered free to SSAT test takers. “Snapshot” is a new online assessment tool that provides schools with a more holistic view of each applicant. It measures eight essential character skills for admission: initiative, intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, resilience, responsibility, self-control, social awareness, and teamwork. Meant to complement more traditional cognitive assessments such as the SSAT, The Snapshot gives admission teams richer information and illuminates areas where their schools can help children grow, thrive, and shine.
